Anna is a 16-year-old girl from Virgina who leads a tough life. Her mother is always on her. Her family doesn’t have much money, but her best friends’ families are rich. She’s extremely jealous of them. When she gets an opportunity to go to Switzerland, she goes to a city where she lives with a very nice family. Her view of life changes radically.  When she gets back home, she sees everything in a different light. Arme Anna is short and easy. This novel has a vocabulary of 300 words. When they read it, beginning students discover that they have actually learned a significant amount of German.

The second novel in the second series of German novels for second-year or intermediate students.  Ben Carmeno is a popular, good-looking guy who has just about everything.  The one thing he doesn’t have is his own car.  On his 17th birthday Ben is certain that his parents are going to give him a new car.  Much to his dismay, Ben learns that, instead of a new car, he is getting a “life experience” which will supposedly change his life forever.  He has to go to the country of Turkey for 3 months and help the victims of a recent earthquake.  If he stays there for the entire summer, he will get a car when he returns.  Ben doesn’t want to go to Turkey, but he desperately wants his own car.  His adventure in Turkey does indeed change his life.
